Freestyle Accreditation Program
The goal of this program will be to provide a framework for Eastern Division members who are interested in developing freestyle teaching/coaching skills that will help facilitate safe lesson content for guests of all ability levels. The initial course offerings will available to any member who has attained their Level I Certification.
It is important to understand that this is not a certification program but rather an accreditation. Course content is designed to promote strong teaching skills in conjunction with pertinent riding tasks. Participants will be taught to guide students in a manner that encourages lateral skill development, the use of teaching for transfer and appropriate lesson pacing. The sessions will also serve as a forum to promote current NSAA safety initiatives such as "Smart Style" and proper pipe and park etiquette.
Below you will find course descriptions that include more specifics about the content found in each of the courses. Come out and session with us!
Intro Session
General Description: (2 days) The basic session begins with identifying when
a rider is at an appropriate level to start to exploring freestyle riding and on
what terrain. Proper park and pipe etiquette is related back to safety in the park.
Tactics and teaching of the following tricks will be included but not limited to;
ground tricks (ollies, nollies, and butters), rails (50/50's, 5-0, boardslides
frontside and backside), straight airs, basic spins (up to 180'S) and basic pipe
riding. If any of the terms are confusing, yes, we will cover those as well.
Prerequisite: AASI Level I Certification, a firm
grasp of teaching concepts and a willingness to try some or all of the maneuvers.
Park Session
General Description: (2 days) The Intermediate Park Session is designed
to offer specialization in more advanced aspects of park riding. This session will
identify when a rider is ready to take it to the next level. Tactics and teaching
of the following tricks will be included but not limited to; 15' to 25' assorted
jumps, switch straight airs, transfers, hips and spines, kinked and curved rails
and spins (up to 540's w/grabs).
Prerequisite: AASI Level I Certification, the
Intro Session, a firm grasp of teaching concepts and a willingness to try some or all
of the maneuvers.
Pipe Session
General Description: (2 days) The Intermediate Pipe Session is designed to
offer specialization in more advanced aspects of pipe riding. This session will
identify when a rider is ready to take it to the next level. Tactics and teaching
of the following tricks will be included but not limited to; varying degree of
carved edge angles from wall to wall, drop-in /deck out from mid-pipe, straight
airs (up to 5') and frontside/backside grabs.
Prerequisite: AASI Level I Certification,
the Intro Session, a firm grasp of teaching concepts and a willingness to try
some or all of the maneuvers.
Master Session
General Description: (3 days) The Master Session will
continue to apply the same concepts illuminated during the Basic
and Intermediate level sessions. However, participants will be expected to
demonstrate in more specific and advanced situations their knowledge and
skills gained through experience as well as their participation in the
subsequent sessions. In order to exhibit Master Session Teaching,
instructors/coaches should not only be adept at assessing a rider's ability,
but also be able to pair the guests/athletes skill-set with appropriate terrain
features that will enable them to safely reach their desired riding outcomes.
A portion of time will also be spent discussing tactics that apply to coaching
versus instruction. It will be required that participants in the Master Session
ride the terrain and content covered throughout the course of the event. At the
end of the three days written feedback will be provided to all participants.
Prerequisite: AASI Level I Certification, the Intro Session, Pipe
Session, Park Session, a firm grasp of teaching concepts and a willingness to try
some or all of the maneuvers.
