Preparing for Level II
Prior to completion of the Level II, Part 1 or Part 2, a ski teacher is required to have attended a two-day prerequisite event. Candidates may choose which part of the exam they would like to take a prerequisite for.
Level II Exam – Part 1 Skiing: The candidate may choose a Development Series Skiing, Mogul Series, Level II Practice Exam, or attend the Pro Jam and participate in the appropriate Level II exam prep course to meet the requirements of the Level II Exam prerequisite. If a candidate chooses one of these courses to use as a prerequisite, the course must be taken PRIOR to the Level II - Part 1 Exam. These events qualify as a prerequisite and are good for the season in which it is taken and the following season. The Level II - Part 1 Skiing Exam must be successfully completed in that timeframe for a these events to be used as a prerequisite for successful completion of the Level II exam process.
A Level II Exam - Part 1 Skiing success will be good for the season in which the exam is passed and the following two seasons. By the end of that time, the candidate must have completed a Level II Prerequisite (if a Part 1 prerequisite was not taken) and the Level II Exam - Part 2 Teaching. Example: The candidate chooses a Mogul Series event as a prerequisite in 2006-2007. The candidate has through the 2007-2008 season to successfully complete the Level II - Part 1 Skiing Exam. Once he passes the skiing exam, he has that season and the following two seasons to pass Level II - Part 2 Teaching Exam. If this candidate passes Part 1 in 2006-2007; he has through the 2008-2009 season to pass Level II - Part 2 Teaching. The candidate is not required to take any additional prerequisites.
As long as a candidate successfully completes the Level II - Part 1 Skiing within the required timeframe, the Development Series Skiing, Mogul Series, Level II Practice Exam, or attending the Pro Jam and participating in the appropriate Level II exam prep course may be used as the prerequisite for the successful completion of the entire Level II exam process.
Level II Exam – Part 2 Teaching - A candidate may opt to choose a prerequisite course for the Level II - Part 2 Teaching and Professional Knowledge portion of the exam. The candidate may choose from two Master Teacher courses, Movement Analysis or Foundations of Teaching, attend the Pro Jam and participate in the appropriate Level II exam prep course or may attend a Level II Teaching Seminar. The Teaching Seminar is designed to give participants an opportunity 1) to become more effective at understanding what they are seeing in a student's skiing, 2) to develop the ability to select meaningful activities for a given situation or student, 3) to articulate why the selected activity is appropriate, 4) to solve teaching problems with the benefit of immediate feedback from an Educational Staff member, and 5) to practice presenting a selected activity in a manner that will encourage the student to achieve the most success. The Teaching Seminar is NOT a skiing improvement clinic and participants should not sign up expecting personal skiing feedback. If the prerequisite course is taken in the season prior to the Level II - Part 1 Skiing Exam, the same timeframe as listed above applies. If the candidate takes a Teaching & Professional Knowledge prerequisite after passing Part 1, the course will be good as long as the candidate is qualified to take the Level II - Part 2 Teaching portion of the exam.
* Attending the Pro Jam and participating in the appropriate Level II exam prep course also meets the requirements of the level II exam prerequisite.
Level II Exam candidates are required to take ONE exam prerequisite course only. They are not required to take a prerequisite course for each part of the exam.
It is advisable for candidates to prepare and ask questions in areas where they may feel weak or uncertain, so that the specific needs of each individual can be addressed by the course conductor to the fullest extent possible.
Preparing for Level III
Although a Level III exam clinic is not a prerequisite for Level III candidates, it is highly recommended that some type of exam prep course be taken before attempting the exam. If the candidate is looking for information in a specific area of the evaluation, (s)he should take a Level III Exam Clinic or should select an appropriate Master Teacher or premier special event.
