Leader Scholarship


The James Randall Leader Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of Jim Leader (1961-1993) whose family has long been committed to the sport of skiing. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Jim was a long time; Level III Alpine certified instructor and supervisor at Killington Ski Area before the tragic automobile accident that claimed his life. Jim is remembered with joy. He had the grace of a gentleperson and a born athlete. He was comfortable in his skin, which allowed him to help other people feel comfortable with themselves. His sense of humor and handsome big smile drew people to him.

Please note: At the request of the Leader family, the Leader Scholarship is awarded to members from Region 2 (Vermont), with first preference given to employees of the Killington Snowsports School.
On the last page, you will be asked to include an essay which outlines your long and short term goals within professional snowsports instruction and how you intend to apply new skills with fellow peers and customers.

You must also e-mail a letter from your ski school director or direct supervisor that attests to the following criteria:
  • • Applicant has worked more than one season at present place of employment as a snowsports instructor.
  • • Applicant consistently performs well for his/her employer.
  • • Applicant displays high standards in customer service.
  • • Applicant respects and works well with peers.
  • • Applicant supports employer’s policies, procedures and philosophies.
  • • Applicant is a team player and is a contributor.
  • • Applicant demonstrates professionalism and professional attitude toward snowsports instruction.
